Hashim Shah
Syed Muhhamad Hashim Shah, commonly known as Hashim Shah (1735-1843) was born in
Jagdev Kalan, the biggest village of tehsil Ajnala, in Amritsar district. He wrote in Punjabi,
Persian, Hindi and Urdu. His Punjabi Poetry contains Qissa (Sassi-Punnu, Sohni-Mahiwal, Heer-
Ranjha and Shirin-Farhad), Dohre, Siharfian, Munajatan, Deodhan, Manje-Asrar (Siharfian) and
Baran Maha. Hashim Shah, followed the family tradition of hikmat (physician),
counselling and Piri-Muridi. He also worked as a carpenter for his living. He left the profession
of carpentry when Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his courtiers patronized him. He devoted his later
life to spiritual attainments and composing Sufi poetry.
