Ahmed Faraz born Syed Ahmad Shah (January 12, 1931-August 25, 2008) was a Pakistani Urdu poet. He is one of the great modern Urdu poets of the last century. Faraz is his pseudonym 'takhalus'. Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University and became lecturer there. He spent six years in self-imposed exile as he was arrested for criticising the military rulers. ਅਹਮਦ ਫ਼ਰਾਜ਼ (੧੨ ਜਨਵਰੀ, ੧੯੩੧-ਅਗਸਤ ੨੫, ੨੦੦੮) ਦਾ ਬਚਪਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਸੱਯਦ ਅਹਮਦ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਸੀ । ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਉਰਦੂ ਕਵੀ ਸਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਉਰਦੂ ਕਵੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਿਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਫ਼ਰਾਜ਼ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਖੱਲੁਸ ਸੀ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੇਸ਼ਾਵਰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਫਾਰਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਰਦੂ ਦੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਲੈਕਚਰਰ ਲੱਗ ਗਏ । ਜਦੋਂ ਸੈਨਿਕ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਛੇ ਸਾਲ ਜਲਾਵਤਨ ਰਹੇ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਉਠਾਈ ।
